Come on over

As you may have noticed, I haven't posted on this blog for a while now.  I know, it's a real disappointment, but there is good news!  I started a new blog!
 Please come over to: http://missledasfarmhouse.blogspot.com/ to read about my further adventures.  And I promise, I will keep up with it this time.

Thank you for visiting :)

Weekend

Some Saturdays are better than others.  This one was of the better variety.  I took Bendi to his farm in the morning, where he is a "barn buddy", which means he feeds and takes care of the farm animals.  His favorite, (and I've heard it's mutual) is Mr. Emu, the emu.  They tell me Bendi has no fear, and goes and plays with him, and hugs him.  (The link to the picture is from the farm's website, and just to be completely clear, it is NOT Bendi next to Mr. Emu.)
 They also have a wallaby called Ruah, a deer called Heidi, (Bendi tells me the baby deer in that picture went to a zoo), cows, goats, horses, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats, guinea pigs, ferrets and probably some others I can't rememer.  It is such a fun place for Bendi to spend the morning.  Anyway, while he was at the farm, I went to the winter farmer's market in Natick.  I met some nice people and got some amazing bread and yummy wine.
I also stopped by my mom's house where I helped her re-wrap the handle of her tennis racket.  (Not much different from placing a bandage on a leg.)
Then, after I picked up Bendi and bought the obligatory weekly squirrel food, and apple pie, (plus a surprise present to some of our chicken friends), we went to Bendi's so-called "yummy food place", (Chipotle) to get some lunch.  Unfortunately he didn't get his whole meal, because they RAN OUT OF CHEESE.  (Pretty poor planning for a Mexican place.)
After lunch we went over to Barnes and Noble and seeing how much fun Bendi was having reading with the new Nook, I finally gave in and got one.  I've been thinking about it for a while now, but what held me back was that I have the original, black and white one, so I should not spend money on a new one, no matter how much more it can do.  What convinced me to get it was how easily Bendi read a whole book, just because it was a cool, finger swooshing, electronic book.  Yes, I wish my son was a great reader, who loved to sit with a book for hours, but he's just not that.  I might as well admit it.  Reading is not his thing.  So if this makes him read more, even though it is so the opposite of how I imagined I'd bring up my son, and the type of things I would make available for him, it works.  I have to embrace the fact that he will grow up with computers, and all kinds of new technology that I will never understand.  He loves nature and animals and being outside so I'm not worried that he will be corrupted by this new technology.

Anyway, I got home to Steven making an amazing sort of Knickerbocker-ish stew with our CSA vegetables.  It was as good as it looks, if not better!

 And today was spend by helping Bendi with his science project...

...and staying inside to get away from the cold wind, and each of us enjoying the things we love most.

I once again decided that I am going to start posting more often, because it feels good to start using my creative side after years of ignoring it, what with a demanding job in the veterinary field it is hard to find enough extra time and energy to be creative.

And that is why I am...

...but that's a whole other story.

Until next time followers, (even if I'm just talking to myself).

What made my day

I love books on tape/CD, and I always have one going.  Right now I'm listening to some E.B. White essays and poems.  This one just made my day.  I hope it will do the same for you:

New Yorker Magazine 1945
"The breeding of the bee," says a United States Department
of Agriculture bulletin on artificial insemination, has
always been handicapped by the fact that the queen mates
in the air with whatever drone she encounters."

When the air is wine and the wind is free
and the morning sits on the lovely lea
and sunlight ripples on every tree
Then love-in-air is the thing for me
I'm a bee,
I'm a ravishing, rollicking, young queen bee,
That's me.
I wish to state that I think it's great,
Oh, it's simply rare in the upper air,
It's the place to pair
With a bee.

Let old geneticists plot and plan,
They're stuffy people, to a man;
Let gossips whisper behind their fan.
(Oh, she does?
Buzz, buzz, buzz!)
My nuptial flight is sheer delight;
I'm a giddy girl who likes to swirl,
To fly and soar
And fly some more,
I'm a bee.
And I wish to state that I'll always mate
With whatever drone I encounter.

There's a kind of a wild and glad elation
In the natural way of insemination;
Who thinks that love is a handicap
Is a fuddydud and a common sap,
For I am a queen and I am a bee,
I'm devil-may-care and I'm fancy-free,
The test tube doesn't appeal to me,
Not me,
I'm a bee.
And I'm here to state that I'll always mate
With whatever drone I encounter.

Mares and cows. by calculating,
Improve themselves with loveless mating,
Let groundlings breed in the modern fashion,
I'll stick to the air and the grand old passion;
I may be small and I'm just a bee
But I won't have science improving me,
Not me,
I'm a bee.
On a day that's fair with a wind that's free,
Any old drone is a lad for me.

I've no flair for love moderne,
It's far too studied, far too stern,
I'm just a bee---I'm wild, I'm free,
That's me.
I can't afford to be too choosy;
In every queen there's a touch of floozy,
And it's simply rare
In the upper air
And I wish to state
That I'll always mate
With whatever drone I encounter.

Man is a fool for the latest movement,
He broods and broods on race improvement;
What boots it to improve a bee
If it means the end of ecstasy?
(He ought to be there
On a day that's fair,
Oh, it's simply rare.
For a bee.)

Man's so wise he is growing foolish,
Some of his schemes are downright ghoulish;
He owns a bomb that'll end creation
And he wants to change the sex relation,
He thinks that love is a handicap,
He's a fuddydud, he's a simple sap;
Man is a meddler, man's a boob,
He looks for love in the depths of a tube,
His restless mind is forever ranging,
He thinks he's advancing as long as he's changing,
He cracks the atom, he racks his skull,
Man is meddlesome, man is dull,
Man is busy instead of idle,
Man is alarmingly suicidal,
Me, I am a bee.

I am a bee and I simply love it,
I am a bee and I'm darn glad of it,
I am a bee, I know about love:
You go upstairs, you go above,
You do not pause to dine or sup,
The sky won't wait ---it's a long trip up;
You rise, you soar, you take the blue,
It's you and me, kid, me and you,
It's everything, it's the nearest drone,
It's never a thing that you find alone.
I'm a bee,
I'm free.

If any old farmer can keep and hive me,
Then any old drone may catch and wife me;
I'm sorry for creatures who cannot pair
On a gorgeous day in the upper air,
I'm sorry for cows that have to boast
Of affairs they've had by parcel post,
I'm sorry for a man with his plots and guile,
His test-tube manner, his test-tube smile;
I'll multiply and I'll increase
As I always have---by mere caprice;
For I am a queen and I am a bee,
I'm devil-may-care and I'm fancy-free,
Love-in-air is the thing for me,
Oh, it's simply rare
In the beautiful air,
And I wish to state
That I'll always mate
With whatever drone I encounter.

Sunday

Well, here I am.  I have been so inspired by some of the blogs I've been reading, I thought, I might try this thing for myself.  It might be a big mistake, but I won't know until I try.

Let's get right to it.

I went on a great walk today with my little babies, both the human and the canine kind.  I went to a local place that is all going to be gone soon, because of development, so I thought I better go before it's too late.  And it was lovely.  I couldn't make myself take a picture of the started development, even though we came across it, instead I kept taking pictures as if nothing was going on.

Boys and their dogs.  One of the best things in life.
